Adam Laurie gave the world first CD ripper ever, 'CDGRAB'. As the internet evolved, Adam and (his brother) Ben became interested in open source projects, and they come up with 'Apache-SSL'-which went on to become the de-facto standard secure web server. Since then Adam is actively involved in busting several myths about wireless technologies, Infrared devices and bluetooth protocols. Lately, Adam unveiled his latest research about RFID's and different threats to privacy. Adam also released a python library "RFIDIOt" for accessing and reading RFID devices. Adam and Ben also pioneered the concept of re-using military data centers (housed in underground nuclear bunkers) as secure hosting facilities. Adam has been a senior member of staff at DEFCON since 1997, and also acted as a member of staff during the early years of the Black Hat Briefings.
Omer: Adam, please introduce yourself.
Adam: Well, I started off with computers in early eighties, when my father was the editor of a computer magazine in UK. So before the computers and the windows that we see today, he used to bring along micro computers, which seems to be pretty interesting for kids. I and my brother used to play with these machines and then my father brought them back to magazine. So we almost witnessed the whole evolution of the computers.
Omer: Since how long have you been associated with events like Black Hat and DefCon?
Adam: The first DefCon that I attended was DefCon IV. Then I attended the DefCon V again and became a "goon" there and there has been no stopping ever since. So, it is almost over 10 years now. When Black Hat first started off, a lot of goons working for DefCon also worked for Black Hat, but it was only for a couple of years. As soon as it became a public commercial event, they hired staff for the work that goons used to do.
Omer: You wrote the first CD ripper, how do you feel about it? RIAA and other recording associations and must be a great fan of yours?
Adam: (Laughs) the problem is that when I wrote the first CD ripper "CDGRAB", the hard disk was so expensive and it used to fill all the hard disk space. So commercially it was really a stupid thing to do, because it would just fill up the entire hard disk and that would cost you 30 times more then a CD. So when I wrote the tool there was no commercial use of it, until years later when someone came up with compression standards and hard disk space got cheaper.
Omer: Are you still maintaining the tool 'CDGRAB'?
Adam: Not really. It was written even before Windows was a popular environment. It was a command line tool originally, but we did a Windows version too. It was programmed in C. Then we just stopped maintaining it, we got distracted by the internet phenomenon so much that we started looking into other ideas.
Omer: You have also been a part of Apache-SSL project, which later became the de-facto standard of the secure web. How the whole idea did come to life?
Adam: It is actually my brother's idea. I have been involved in the later stages to do the testing, release and documentation. It was Ben Laurie who actually coded the Apache-SSL. The whole idea came even before the internet. We had email addresses even before the web was really famous. We started with bulletin boards (fidonet) and then when internet came along, there was a company in the UK, called "Daemon", who was actually just bunch of people chatting on the bulletin boards, before they formed this company. So they were just chatting that if 100 of us could get together, may be we could buy a dedicated leased line onto a service provider, and we'll just put up some modems there and then you can just dial in and get on to the internet. We were one of the first groups in the UK, who pooled up the resources together to get on to the internet and that company later became one of the biggest service providers in UK. It has nothing to do with us; we were just the first customers. We then started doing the internet projects and we realized that there is no secure open source web server over the internet. U.S had some border restrictions over the use of cryptography. Outside the U.S you couldn't get a cryptographic web server. So we went to the UK government and asked that what the rules for using crypto in UK are. They responded that its somewhat a grey area, we are still not sure, but just keep a record of whatever you send across and that shouldn't be a problem. We thought that it's not something really practical. But luckily then Cambridge University and Oxford University stepped forward and said that we will do the distribution for you, you write the code and then publish it to us. We'll put it on our public servers. So technically this makes them the publisher of the software and if they have any legal challenges to face, they have big legal departments who can deal with this.
Omer: Was this a formal association with Oxford University and Cambridge University?
Adam: Not really. It was an informal association. It was just an agreement. My brother wrote the code, we published it to them; and they put it onto their web servers. And then it became the de-facto standard of the web, because it was the only one around.
Omer: Were you guys expecting it to be that big?
Adam: We never expected it to be that big.
Omer: You have also been held responsible for finding some critical bluetooth bugs? What was that?
Adam: Well I discovered Blue Snarfing, it is actually a problem found in bluetooth phones that can be exploited to pull out phone books and other information without the knowledge of the owner. The problem was quite wide spread and it involved some of the very popular business phones like Nokia 6310i. There was a great problem communicating with the cell phone manufacturers, because they were not just used to the idea of someone coming to them and saying that you have a problem. So, you know, the whole idea of full disclosure and the philosophy of open source are quite alien to them. At first, they treated the problem with suspicion that why would you tell us or I am trying to blackmail them. So, they really didn't understand that all we want is to get the problem fixed. We want to use the technology, here's the security hole, and this is how you reproduce it, just go ahead and fix it.
Omer: Has it been fixed now?
Adam: It has on most phones now. In fact, about a year later, they arranged bluetooth security events. It's actually a nice thing to do. All manufacturers get together in hotel, do the interoperability tests, and run them through security procedures. There's no compensation on that level, where everything is designed to function properly. We did this for around 18 months and it was quite a success. We found many problems and they fixed it before it hits the street. But then they discontinued the program and I don't think that they are doing any security specific testing any more, so I do expect more problems.
Omer: Lately you have been inspired by RFID's. Please tell us about that.
Adam: Okay. There are two areas that I am looking into. One is where RFID is used as an authentication token like you have door entry systems. So, the problem there is that all the tag is doing is giving out just an ID number, which they claim is unique, like your door key is unique, but it can be of course copied. The industry is trying to tell us that an electronic key is somehow magically different and it cannot be copied. So I demonstrated that these RFID's can be pretty easily copied and a good copy will open the door and it's not perfectly safe to use the technology. Actually there was quite an interesting situation recently, when there was a company that threatened to sue on breach of patents if they revealed how their systems work or if they demonstrated a device that can clone the door keys. So what I have been doing is using manufacturer's own technology against them. So what I do is that instead of building emulation, I take an existing door tag and reprogrammed it to pretend to be another tag or even to pretend to be another manufacturer's authentication token. So what I found was original methods that manufacturer used to program the door tags in the first place and what protocols do they use.
Omer: You have ruined infrared devices, explored wi-fi environments, busted bluetooth and now demystifying RFID's. Why are you against technology? (In good humor)
Adam: (Laughs) I am not against technology. I am against inappropriately used technology. I think technology is great. The reason why I wanted them to fix bluetooth is that I liked the technology and I wanted to be able to rely on it. I don't want it to make me insecure and the same is with RFID's. I think that the idea is dangerous that the tags are magically unique and they cannot be cloned, of course they can be cloned.
Omer: Why do you think that there is a gap between the product development and the security of the products? Lousy administrators and poorly configured devices is one thing, but the intrinsically flawed protocols, buggy stacks and second-rate implementations is another. What do you think could be the reason?
Adam: Well I think it's usually the cost. The manufacturers are just looking for ways to increase revenues and doing a proper security is often an expected thing and they would say that well, we'll worry about it later, if it becomes a problem. So the security of the system is second consideration and by the time it becomes a problem, it's already too late because it's already deployed. At this stage they should stop and do what they should have done in the first place. But the culture is changing. The internet has gone through a very long and painful process of learning that. The internet used to be the same software vendors and they never always released patches as Microsoft is doing it now. The old Microsoft would say that there are no problems, play it down and hope nobody hears about it, discredit the person who find the problem in the first place. But they realized that actually engaging with the open source and even the hacker community is a good thing for every one. It's about revealing problems and getting them fixed and its far better to admit to the public that you have an issue, deal with it quickly rather then trying to cover it up and then the public found out that you have an issue any ways and then you just look bad. You actually look quite good if you say "yup, we got that wrong but here's the fix". Everyone will forgive and forget, because they know that where there'll be complex system, there will be problems.
Omer: In recent times, the ethics of full disclosure has been questioned. There are more corporate and political pressures on security researchers, especially if you remember Michael Lynn's controversy last year. What is your take on this?
Adam: Well again I think it's very dangerous that the commercial world is getting such a strong foothold into the rules that govern what we can do in the world of security, the rules about reverse engineering and so on. When laws start to back up philosophies that if there is something bad, you shouldn't talk about it rather then you should fix it. No one is allowed to talk about it; no one is allowed to fix it because in theory nobody knows that its there and what we found is that full disclosure does actually work. Manufacturers will fix things if you publicly disclose the fact that they've got a problem. If you don't, they would tend not to because they don't need to and they can save the money. But the bad guys would know about the problem. If the bunch of amateurs, who have nothing to gain, can find problems, then so can bunch of criminals, who have a lot to gain, financially motivated, they have the organizations, they have the skill, they are going to find the problem. So your best defense against that is to encourage people to look for problems and to deal with problems rather then punishing them for this. I think this is the most dangerous thing to do. They have been publishing about the so-called "hacker tools", but what's a hacker tool? If I write a tool that can catch the clones of the door entry tag, is that a hacker tool or is that a tool that the industry is using anyway to program the tags in the first place and if I am afraid to publish it because I will be prosecuted then the problem never gets fixed because nobody is even aware about it other then the bad guys.
Omer: How does your lab look like?
Adam: Imagine a big pile of random cables and wires, you know, the mad scientist lab basically. I collect a lot of hardware and whenever I see a device that I'd think might be usable, I buy it. I take lots of electronic out of junk piles as well, so if I see an old tape, I'll just rip the magnetic tape and use it somewhere. I keep on doing lots of random stuff. I have a very chaotic lab, 3 or 4 laptops tossing around, popped up computers everywhere.

Civil cases aren't as widely publicized because they don't ever have the same dramatic punch that often comes with a big criminal case.

It may come as a surprise to many people just how different the two types of suits are - here are some of the biggest differences between criminal and civil law cases.

The Verdict and Subsequent Ruling

This is the major reason why criminal cases are so much more publicized and advertised in the media. The defendant in a criminal case runs much more of a risk - a guilty verdict can bring with it several different forms of punishment depending upon the severity of the crime committed.

Crimes are broken down into two sub categories - first are the felonies, which are the larger offenses and which will most likely result in more severe punishments. Second are misdemeanors, which are the smaller offenses and will likely yield sentences that are not quite as harsh.

A person charged with first degree murder, which is the top of the ladder as far as felonies are concerned, could receive life in prison without parole - or even the death penalty depending upon the state in which the crime was committed. Lesser felony offenses may still yield large amounts of jail time, depending upon the nature of the crime; whether there was pre-meditation, or if the person has been involved in similar criminal activity before.

Misdemeanor charges with convictions often result in one of or a combination of the following - fines, probation, community service and in some cases jail time. Again depending on the circumstances surrounding the crime, the punishment may be either more or less severe.

The defendants involved in a civil case will never, under any circumstances - regardless of the crime charged, be subject to the same forms of punishment as those convicted in criminal cases. In fact, regardless of the nature of the crime committed defendants convicted in civil cases will never do any time in prison. In a criminal case, the defendant is innocent until proven guilty. If the defense can inject even the smallest shadow of doubt on the plaintiffs case the verdict in the case will (or should) return not guilty. If the jury is not very close to one hundred percent certain that the defendant committed the crime in question, then there is no conviction.

The proof required to get the desired verdict in a civil case is not nearly as high as that of a criminal case. If the plaintiff can initially convince the jury that it's reasonably possible that the defendant is responsible, the burden for proving their innocence falls on the defense. If the evidence shows more than fifty percent probability that the defendant is responsible a guilty verdict can be returned and the defendant then becomes responsible for reparations.

Even if the defendant is convicted of the charges and ordered to pay, it still doesn't mean that the plaintiff will receive a financial windfall as a result of the conviction. Often if the defendant has nothing to give, then the plaintiff won't receive the judgment awarded.

Even if the charges are exactly the same, the results and subsequent penalties handed down can be drastically different in criminal cases and civil cases. Do you feel you understand the law of attraction but just don't seem to be getting the things you desire? Are you frustrated? Do you manifest some things but not others? The truth is you most likely have not been taught the "key" principle to using law of attraction the way it was intended to be used and not the way most practitioners are currently teaching it.

You may have studied the law of attraction, read law of attraction books, and may have seen the movie "The Secret". After all your study, you probably have applied each and every step you have learned but something isn't working. Things aren't appearing in your life as you expected.

Instead of happily manifesting everything you desire you find yourself frustrated. You start doubting yourself. You begin to feel as though you are doing it wrong or the law of attraction just doesn't work.

Perhaps you are able to manifest some things here and there but cannot find that perfect combination to allow you to consistently bring to you those things you desire.

Here's a news flash. There is a great lie behind using law of attraction as it has been traditionally taught. In "The Secret" you are led to believe you simply focus on a desire and "poof" it will appear into your life. This has misled many people. Many law of attraction teachers have been trained to teach law of attraction in this manner. It is not their fault; they just either don't get it or have totally bought into the myth playing out in this fashion.

Whether you are able to manifest on a hit and miss scenario or not at all, the fault lies in the manner in which you have been taught about the law of attraction. The movie "The Secret" leads most people to assume that all you have to do is merely focus on those things you desire and they will eventually come into your life. A perfect example is the scene in which a woman gazes into a jewelry store window at a beautiful necklace. In another scene you see her wearing that very necklace. You are led to believe she simply focused on having that necklace and she manifested it into her life. That in itself will set you up for a major disappointment!

I spent thousands of dollars studying the law of attraction, taking classes, buying books, enrolling in teleseminars and all of them were telling me the same old song and dance. I have been able to manifest some great things but not on a consistent basis. There seemed to be a trend to my manifesting but I could not put my finger on it at first. I prayed and asked for guidance and after several long months, guidance came and so did the answer.

Through my recent studies, I learned that the law of attraction is not a physical law and is not based on quantum physics as is traditionally taught. The law of attraction is a spiritual law, freely given to all by God. It is based on love. Through this law we are given things (our desires) through serving others. If you are using the law of attraction strictly for your own personal gain, you will gain little to nothing from it. This is most likely why you have had this hit or miss type of manifesting experience.

Recently, I had someone ask me how to use the law of attraction in his life and business. Among the things he desired was a beautiful woman, a large house, wealth and many customers. I asked him what the goal and purpose behind his business was. His reply came very quickly. It was to make money. When we discussed how law of attraction works based on and serving others, which in this case would be his customers, his true desire was still focused on the end result which was the money. I recommended a book for him to read and suggested he do an exercise that would allow him to evaluate the goals he had for four areas of his life and the reasons for each of them. Focusing on his health, home, business, and relationships would hopefully give him some insight on what he wanted and why. Until he could move his focus onto serving others and away from himself and the money, he would have little success with using the law of attraction.

As long as your focus is strictly self serving, the law of attraction will offer you little in the way of generating your desires. You may see some greedy, self serving people who have wealth. Imagine how much wealthier they would be and how many great things they could have done if their focus had been on serving others instead of their own selves!

When you are in business and focusing on providing the best service possible to your customers, clients, patients, etc. you will manifest more customers, clients, patients, etc. which in turn will bring you greater income through the growth of your business. You will find your life transformed. There will be more joy in your day. You will gain referrals and opportunities will open to you that will offer greater expansion of your business, service, and income.

So, re-evaluate the current manner in which you are practicing the law of attraction. Are you using it as a self serving tool or as a means to help others? By helping to improve the lives of others, you will far exceed your manifestation expectations through the law of attraction.

A Critical View of the Law of Attraction and Quantum Theory

The law of attraction which claims itself to be a law, fails to justify itself on the grounds of falsifiability, that is, "the logical possibility that an assertion can be shown as false by an observation or a physical experiment".

Falsifiability implies that if a certain condition applies to a situation, or a person, an inference may be drawn out of it and the same condition may not apply to all other similar situations or persons. For example, a man who is dark skinned is Asian. This does not mean that all dark skinned men are Asian or that all Asians are dark skinned. The law of attraction takes a few incidents where people have tasted success, and attempts to apply the same philosophy to all situations.

When judged by many scientific testing parameters the law fails to live up to its logical quotient. This means that the claims brought by the theory are unable to give an exact relation between the thought process and the results. The cause and effect relation, as posited, often overlooks the probable deterring factors or differences in circumstances. The theory makes a hypothetical study of human nature and draws out the inference, by frequent and repeated reference to a few instances, some of which may also be coincidences.

Modern believers in the law of attraction are of opinion that the theory originates from quantum physics, in its treatment of thoughts as atoms.
According to theories in quantum physics, the world is composed of countless atoms. Each of these atoms is charged with energy and is interchangeable, i.e. they can be used to influence each other and are open for infinite changes. This explains a sense of dynamism of thought. The law of attraction speaks on somewhat similar lines as quantum physics in terms of thought as energy atoms.

Following the example of quantum physics, the law supposes the human mind to be composed of thoughts. Each of these thoughts are like charged atoms which are capable of generating enormous power. The law of attraction, going further along the lines of quantum physics, points out, that since energy and matter are interchangeable and can be utilized for good results, the human mind, which is also open to changes, helps us in molding the situations in our life to shape our reality.

According to quantum physics atoms have energy and are drawn towards atoms with similar energy composition. So following that principle, the law of attraction states that thoughts like atoms are drawn towards same kind of thoughts. Thus, the law of attraction points out that "like attracts like". This explains how thoughts relating to ones goal attract thoughts centering on the ways to achieve it, eventually attracting thoughts of reaching the goal.

Again, quantum physics points out that everything has potential and nothing is fixed, which means, if our goal is fixed, there are a number of ways to achieve it. In the same way, the law of attraction points out that if we are focused over what we want to achieve, nothing can prevent us from reaching it. Thus, quantum physics also speaks of what the law of attraction referred to as fending off negative thought through thinking.

Though the law of attraction bears similarity with quantum physics in many ways, it is not a scientific law, in the true sense of the term. The law of attraction is more a part of pseudoscience and a gathering of spiritual philosophies to gauge the power of human mind. Quantum physics may be considered a concrete means of explaining what the law of attraction aims at propagating.

The references to quantum physics made by the law of attraction are mostly incorrect. The proposition that thoughts, like atoms have energy fields is not a proven fact in science. The principles of thought, as supposed by the law of attraction, underline certain beliefs that are true in some cases and may be followed as example. Many of its credos have a hypothetical explanation, often attaching magical imagination. The law of attraction is mostly refined pseudoscience and has very less to do with concrete scientific truth.

Among the spiritual circles, the law of attraction is criticized strongly because of its attempts to hold individual ego and self will at unity with the higher self. The two are contradictory and cannot operate in synergy. On the other hand, the law of attraction which emphasizes repeatedly the inner consciousness and spiritual integrity makes a generalized statement; it overlooks the diversified collective mind and treats the single as the many.

The law of attraction refers to abundance. The theory explains profundity as feeling of happiness. The question is, why the law of attraction, (which is capable of resolving every situation), is unable to solve the problem of inequality of wealth? Moreover, the law of attraction aims at abundance, taking into account, there is enough for all and one only has to find his share of prosperity. The theory wants us to believe in a truth which hardly exists. The law of attraction does not delve deep enough to consider the societies or cultures where it cannot operate likewise.

The law of attraction, no doubt, is an inspiring theory dealing with the unrealized powers of mind. However, the theory appears too generalized and often misses out on external factors which may not be within the minds reach.

Taxation of the Foreign Natural Persons According to the Bulgarian Tax Legislation

From 1st of January 2008 the taxation of the natural persons has been amended in accordance with the EU regulations and the tax rate for the incomes was fixed to 10%.

The tax legislation in Bulgaria recognizes two types of Taxable Persons-local natural persons and foreign natural persons.

By law a foreign natural person is any person who has no permanent residence in Bulgaria and whose centre of vital interests is not situated in Bulgaria as well as a person who is not present within the territory of Bulgaria for a period exceeding 183 days in any twelve-month period.

Any foreign natural person shall be liable to pay tax in respect of any income acquired from sources inside the Republic of Bulgaria, including any income from rent or other provision for use of movable or immovable property.

However, there are some categories of income which are not subject to taxation. These are explicitly listed in the Income Taxes on Natural Persons Act. For example, taxation shall not apply to any income acquired during the tax year from the sale or exchange of:

• one residential immovable property, regardless of the date of acquisition of the said property;

• up to two immovable properties, as well as any number of agricultural and forest properties, provided that more than five years have elapsed between the date of acquisition and the date of sale or exchange

So, if a foreign natural person sales one immovable property during one financial year, the foreign natural person shall not be liable to pay tax for the received income regardless of the date of acquisition of the said property.

In relation to the above the taxation shall apply to the income which is not included in the list of Non-Taxable Incomes. The taxable incomes are for example the incomes from rent and from the sale or exchange of immovable property. For the purpose of determination of the annual amount of tax, first the received annual income from rent shall be reduced with 10 % fixed amount of expenses and the rest of the amount shall be multiplied with 10 % tax rate. The taxable income acquired from the sale or exchange of immovable property shall be determined by debiting the positive difference between the selling price and the cost of acquisition of any such property with 10 per cent expenses as the rest of the amount shall be multiplied with 10 % tax rate.

The non-resident natural persons (foreign persons) shall submit an annual tax return, completed in a standard form in respect of the income subject to levy of tax on the aggregate annual taxable amount.
The annual tax return shall be submitted on or before the 30th day of April of the year next succeeding the year of acquisition of the income.

When the income subject to levy of tax originates from rent and is paid by the management company, then the annual tax return shall be submitted by the management company not by the foreign person. Respectively, when the income from rent is paid by local natural person, then the foreign person who has received the income shall be liable to submit the annual tax return.

After the new amendments in the tax legislation the rate of final tax for the income of the natural persons and of the legal entities is 10 %.

However, the advantage of establishing of legal entity is that the expenses which have been made during the financial year are deducted from the annual income and the received amount is treated as a taxable profit. For example, if a foreign person is renting hisher property through a local company then all the expenses, which have been made for utilities, staff, etc. shall be deducted from the received income and the difference shall be taxed with 10 % rate.

When a foreign person receives an income as a natural person, then all the expenses which have been paid for utilities, staff, etc. shall not be deducted from the received income.

Basic Laws of Electronics

Thanks to the physical laws of electronics, circuit analysis is very procedural. This is the second entry in a tutorial in basic electronics. The first entry covered basic electronic concepts such as voltage, current, and power. This session will cover Ohm's Law, and Kirchhoff's Laws of voltage and current. These are the fundamental laws needed for circuit analysis and design.

Resistors and Ohm's Law

Georg Simon Ohm was a German physicist that in 1826 experimentally determined most basic laws that relate to voltage and current for a resistor.

Ohm's law basically states that the resistance of a component (commonly a resistor) is equal to the voltage dropped over the resistor divided by the current going through it.

This law makes it relatively easy to find one of three values: voltage across a resistance, the resistance value itself, or the current flowing through the resistance (as long as the other two values are known).

Nodes, Branches, and Loops

These three concepts must be understood for basic circuit analysis. They help determine if components are in series or parallel and if the components share the same current or have the same voltage drops.

A branch represents a single circuit component such as a resistor or voltage source.

A node is a point where two or more branches connect.

A loop is any closed path in a circuit.

Elements are in series if they exclusively share a single node. Elements that are in series share the same current.

Elements are in parallel if they are connected to the same two nodes. Elements in parallel have the same voltage across them.

Kirchhoff's Laws

The first of Kirchhoff's Laws is Kirchhoff's current law (KCL). This law states that the sum of all current entering a node or enclosed area of a circuit is equal to zero. Simply put, current entering a node or area equals the current leaving the node or area.

The second of Kirchhoff's Laws is Kirchhoff's voltage law (KVL). This law states that the sum of all voltages around a closed path or loop is equal to zero. Simply put, the sum of voltage drops equals the sum of voltage rises.

This is found by following the loop in one direction (the direction does not matter). If the positive terminal is hit first, the voltage is added. If the negative terminal is hit first, the voltage is subtracted. Together these values will equal zero.

Once all of the voltages are found, we can start the loop anywhere we want. I find it convenient to start at the negative terminal of a main voltage source. Since we hit a negative terminal first, we subtract it. Now we simply finish the loop and add the voltages together.

This law comes in very handy for analysis.

Basic DC Analysis

By combining Kirchhoff's voltage and current laws, basic DC circuits are relatively easy to analyze. Knowing that all voltages in a loop add up to zero and all currents entering a node, minus currents leaving a node also equals zero, most current and voltage values can be easily obtained.

If a loop contains one voltage source and multiple resistances, voltage division (eq. 1) should be used to find the value of voltage drops across the known resistances. Once the voltage across the known resistance is found, Ohm's law (eq. 2) can be used to determine the current flowing through the resistance.

Eq.1 Voltage Division:

((voltage source in volts) (resistor of interest in ohms))/(sum of resistance in loop)

Eq.2 Ohm's Law:

(voltage across a resistance) = (known resistance)(current flowing through resistance)

Keep in mind that resistors in series can be added to give total resistance between two nodes. The total resistance between two nodes that have resistors in parallel is found using eq. 3 below.

Eq. 3 Equivalent Resistance (Req) of Resistors in parallel:

Req = ((resistance in branch 1)(resistance in branch 2)) / (sum of resistances in both branches)

There is much more to be said about DC circuit analysis but most would go beyond the scope of this article. The purpose of this article is to give a basic understanding of the laws and concepts of basic electronics.

Other concepts that make DC circuit analysis easier are current division, mesh analysis, and nodal analysis. These techniques use the rules behind KVL, KCL, and Ohm's Law but would require a visual example for thorough explanation.

I hope that this short tutorial has been helpful to anyone who is new to the world of electronics either as a hobbyist or as a technician trying to learn electronics repair.

New Natural Gas Pipeline Excavation Laws

Explosions caused by natural gas leaks are rare considering the 1.9 million miles of natural gas distribution pipeline in the United States. When they do happen they are often caused by damage from construction companies excavating a site for new construction or to repair existing construction.

In 2006 Congress passed legislation called the Pipeline Inspection, Protection, Enforcement, and Safety Act of 2006. The purpose of the legislation is to prevent excavation damage to natural gas pipelines through the enhanced us and improved enforcement of state One Call laws. One Call laws require excavators to contact the state One Call system prior to excavating to locate the underground pipe. The excavators are also required to report any damage or escape of gas caused by their digging.

• The parties having lived apart in pursuant to a judgment or decree of separation of at least one or more years and substantial proof submitted by the plaintiff in fulfilling these conditions.

• The fulfilling of the Separation Agreement must be keen. This is the most common ground used by most people to secure a no-fault divorce. This is in accordance with both the plaintiff's fulfillment of the said conditions.

The ground work for the current international laws for laser weapons was laid back 1949 Geneva Convention. The Six Day war in the Middle East and the Vietnam war in the Far East received a lot of media attention, bring home to the public the gruesome reality of warfare. After these two wars, the opinion in many countries and organizations such as International Committee of the Red Cross/Red Crescent (ICRC) was that the 1949 Geneva Convention were inadequate for modern warfare and needed revising.

The four-sessions of Diplomatic Conference on the Reaffirmation and Development of International Humanitarian Law Applicable in Armed Conflicts (Diplomatic Conference) were held between 1974 and 1977 to enactment two Additional Protocols (AP) to the 1949 Geneva Conventions. The two APs did not make any rules about specific weapons and mainly repeated customary prohibitions such as explosive ammunition and expanding dum dum bullets, which are capable of causing superfluous injury and unnecessary suffering to the victims.

During a 1979-1980 United Nations Summit in Geneva, a treaty and three protocols banning specific weapons was adopted. Later in 1995 a follow up review conference was held in Vienna. During this conference participants agreed to add a new Protocol on Blinding Laser Weapons to the Geneva Convention.

This new protocol, Protocol IV states "It is prohibited to employ laser weapons specifically designed, as their sole combat function or as one of their combat functions, to cause permanent blindness to unenhanced vision, that is to the naked eye or to the eye with corrective eyesight devices..."

In simple terms, lasers that are designed to blind people were made illegal by international law.

Despite this law, many countries are investing billions in the research and production of laser weapons. For example the US has awarded multimillion dollar contracts to defense contractors such as Boeing and Northrop Grumman for the development, testing and production of laser weapons.

The countries producing laser weapons are using a loop hole in Protocol IV by stating their weapons are not designed specifically to blind and are there for legal. Blinding some one is much easier than killing them or destroying vehicles and even the most advanced laser weapon has limited capability so the future effectiveness of international laws on laser weapons remains to be seen.

Anti Smoke Laws Unfair Or Fair?

The anti smoke laws that are being put into law are increasing in number everyday. The effects of the law will be examined a little later. But you probably already know that second hand smoke is deadly. Not only to innocent bystanders but to the environment, your pets, and of course yourself.

It can be argued that the smoker has a better chance at not getting lung cancer, COPD (smokers cough) and such like because of the filtered cigarettes. That is malarkey. The filters on these cigarettes are nothing more than tightly bound toilet paper. Sure it may trap a few particles and carcinogens here and there. But, you'll likely develop some components of smokers disease. Whether its the productive cough, dried up lips and leather like skin or stained teeth. These are all merely precursors of what is underlying the diagnosis of the disease.

When my goes out to dinner, one of the most irritating things is for us to find the right restaurant and sit down to order. No sooner that 7 minutes later, my wife's lungs begin to twitch. We've got a rule now. Whenever we go out to eat or do anything, if the establishment is not smoke free we leave.

We developed this rule after she had to go to the emergency department for an asthma exacerbation. Whenever her asthma flares, my daughters asthma generally has a lagged response.

I am in favor of the anti smoke laws. Even though part of me sides with the business owners that argue this infringes on their ability to do a fair trade. This may or may not tip the hands in favor of your competitor. Yet the fact remains that you would not have a business without customers which are people. Protecting the rights of some while harming the health of others should not be a question of debate. You do what is right for the good of all. Which in this case is health. Without your health you have nothing in this life.

The jury is still out on whether these anti smoke laws will be effective or not. Some time down the road we may look at the long term health and mortality studies and conclude that these laws were just the right thing. Now this may or may not encourage some people to quit smoking. The choice is still up to them. But in the mean time as they come to some resolution within themselves, we should not be harmed by their liberties.

Jim Crow Laws

The history of racism in the United States is known to virtually everyone who resides in the 50 states, as well those people who reside outside of the United States. Soon after their arrival in North America, immigrant settlers began importing slaves. Gradually, as the 13 colonies expanded and increasing amounts of slaves began to be brought over from Africa, settlers began more and more attached to slavery.

Because of the importance of slavery to people of the South, they were willing to secede from the Union, as they attempted to do in 1861, sparking the Civil War. After the South lost the Civil War and had to cease slavery, however, they were not willing to let blacks gain equal rights. As a result, the Southern states instituted a number of racist laws discriminating against blacks. These laws were called Jim Crow laws.

Jim Crow laws were first enacted in 1876. They sought to segregate blacks from white completely. Blacks and whites had different bathrooms. They had to use different water fountains. They had to sit at the back of buses. As time progressed, Jim Crow laws worsened. Many Southern states passed many laws effectively barring blacks from voting. For example, they instituted something called a Grandfather Clause, whereby for people to be allowed to vote, their grandfather had to vote. But because blacks' grandfathers could not vote, neither could the blacks during Jim Crow. Another law instituted by many Southern states was the literacy test, whereby voters had to be literate to to vote. But because almost all blacks could not read, they were prevented from voting.

Jim Crow laws lasted until 1965, when the Supreme Court effectively ruled them unconstitutional. But up until 1965, blacks had endured harsh treatment from whites. Blacks were lynched left and right. They were spat at, hosed, and cursed at. They suffered from inadequate social, political, and economic opportunities, and all of the discrimination was institutionalized based on heavy racism that whites possessed.

While racism has died down today and discriminatory and racist laws and practices are illegal, discrimination through at least subconscious racism still occurs. The effects of Jim Crow laws and racism have trickled down to the modern-day. Blacks tend to mix and mingle for the most part with another, and many people avoid them or have prejudiced or stereotyped views of them based in racist beliefs. Also, blacks often face discrimination in the workplace. They sometimes get passed up in favor of whites for promotion, for example.

There are 2 sides to the changes in bankruptcy rules. It will be a lot harder to file bankruptcy under chapter 7 and get a totally clean slate.

For businesses, relying on issuing credit, the new personal bankruptcy law is doing great, reducing personal bankruptcy claims from the thousands to double digits.(In the short run).

However, lawyers working with the actual people filing for bankruptcy say that the new law is seriously flawed because it puts more financial burdens on already broke clients and reduces potential debt repayment to small businesses.

And then of course you have the credit card companies charging high interest rates which in quite a few cases caused the bankruptcy in the first place.
According to some financial specialists, much of the debt people accumulate is a result of keeping up with the Joneses and not thinking ahead.

For 80% of clients counseled each month, the debt is credit card related and averages $32,000 - a result of six to eight cards. Consumer credit organizations say the new law provides debt-reducing strategies for those considering filing bankruptcy and curbs abuse.

Under the new law it has become a requirement that the person filing bankruptcy obtains credit counseling both before and after filing for which that person will be charged..

So now the consumer would then know the advantages and disadvantages of declaring bankruptcy. Yet it seems merely another expense for an already financially stressed individual.

People filing bankruptcy in general are not overspenders, but merely faced with temporary financial disasters such as medical costs, layoffs, a divorce, gambling debts or other crises. Before you can file bankruptcy,you are now required to complete credit counseling with an agency approved by the U.S. Trustees office.

This credit counseling is designed to help you determine whether or not bankruptcy is appropriate.

Once you complete your bankruptcy, the law requires you to attend another credit counseling session.

These are new requirements, before this law was passed the law did not require a person to go through counseling either before or after the filing of bankruptcy.

Second, under the old law, a person could decide to file under Chapter 7 or Chapter 13. Under the new law, the court will look at your monthly income and apply a means test relating to the state in which you live. If your income is less than or equal to the medium income then you will be allowed to file Chapter 7 which in effect will give you a clean slate.

This medium income can vary from $28,000 in Missouri to $56,000 in Alaska. If your income is greater, you may be forced to file Chapter 13 unless you can demonstrate you do not have enough disposable income.

Under Chapter 13 you will not get a clean slate but will have to make payments on your debts.

Also, your attorney now has to personally certify that your bankruptcy filing is accurate. This means more work for the attorney, with higher legal fees.

Advantages of declaring Bankruptcy:

Legal protection from creditors
Takes care of all or most debt
In some cases, can keep home and car
May stop complete financial ruin
Provides a fresh start

Disadvantages of declaring Bankruptcy:

Bad credit
May have to repay partial debt load and return collateral to creditors
May lose assets, including house and car (If the house is worth more than a certain amount).
Bankruptcy becomes public record, and
Remains on credit record for seven to 10 years

“In the past, a bankruptcy offered a fresh start for the filer,” said Columbia attorney Gwen Froeschner Hart. “The new federal legislation offers language directed at helping creditors.”

If you analyze credit card expenses for most people you'll see that they often include medical bills and day-to-day expenses for the elderly or those earning low or fixed incomes. Records show that 50% of credit card holders do not pay their full credit card bills every month.

With the recent Medicaid cuts and rigid bankruptcy legislation who knows what is going to happen to these people.

There are some who say consumers are abusing creditors. The irony is that credit card companies are begging for customers and offering large amounts of unsecured credit, yet at the same time, lobbying for stricter debt controls.

Any instance of employer interference or harassment related to this issue may be reported to the National Labor Relations Board within a period of 180 days.

Workplace Safety

To protect their workers from possible hazards in their workplace, the employers must provide them with adequate training seminars and programs on how to protect themselves on the job. If necessary, the companies must supply all the protective equipment and gears.

Employers disregarding this right of the workers may be brought to the Division of Occupational Safety and Health.

Can You Drink and Avoid the DUI Laws

Because everyone's bodies are different and the law needs a place to draw the line, drunk driving laws in every state have a set blood alcohol content level that is considered "drunk driving." This is .08 in most states. However, many people can be drunk with levels far below this, and the amount of alcohol it takes to reach the "legal limit" according to DUI laws varies from person to person. For this reason, it is best to never drive after drinking.

When does impairment begin? We know that .08 is an unsafe level because once blood alcohol content reaches this point drivers are 11 times more likely to be involved in a car accident. However, what about a blood alcohol content of .02? Is this considered "safe" to drive?

When researchers look at blood alcohol levels to determine what is safe, participants with blood alcohol levels of .02 are already showing a loss of judgment. This is the point where alcohol helps you to relax and enjoy yourself. You do not yet feel drunk, but you are able to party a little harder. However, when you step behind the wheel of a car, you will suffer from lowered visual functions. You will also find it difficult to multitask. This means that simply reaching down to turn on the radio while you are driving could be too difficult for you, causing you to be in a crash.

What about a couple more drinks? Let's say that your blood alcohol content increases to .05. At this level, you can expect to see exaggerated actions, inability to focus your eyes quickly, less alertness, less inhibition, and more impaired judgment. Your coordination is greatly reduced, which is particularly dangerous when you are driving. Your response in an emergency situation is going to be very slow, putting those around you at severe risk. Yet at .05 you are still far below the legal DWI limit.

The good news for other people on the road is that most states have DUI laws that allow the officer at the scene of a crime to arrest you for DUI even if your blood alcohol content level is less than .08. Every state has some type of Lemon Law for new cars. This is a law that sets forth your rights and the potential remedies available to you in the event that you have purchased a defective vehicle from a manufacturer. While some states' laws are better than others, they are all very powerful and for the most part are very consumer oriented.
A typical Lemon Law is based on the premise that any vehicle which exhibits a defect or non-conformity that substantially impairs the use, value or safety of that vehicle is a lemon. Generally speaking, defects involving the engine, transmission, brakes, suspension, electrical system, water leakage and steering are the types of defects that make a vehicle this. Please know that the offered list is not all inclusive, as there are other types of defects or situations that can make a vehicle a lemon.
Lemon laws typically provide that the manufacturer must be given a reasonable opportunity to repair the alleged defects. The number of repair attempts that are deemed reasonable varies from state to state, but it would be safe to say that the average number of repair attempts that are sufficient to meet the "reasonable" standard is three to four.
If the manufacturer is unable to correct the defect or nonconformity after making those repair attempts, most states provide that you are entitled to either a full refund of the purchase price or a free replacement vehicle. A full refund means that you are entitled to recoup any down-payment, trade-in equity, payments made and associated costs that you had with the purchase of the vehicle. A free replacement vehicle means that you can receive a brand new model of the vehicle that you are driving, at no increased cost to you. With either of the aforesaid options, the manufacturer is often entitled to a deduction for mileage that you have driven the "lemon" vehicle. This deduction typically amounts to a few hundred dollars.

To Americans, obedience sounds like a four letter word. In this land of freedom, first amendment rights, a general open society, it is difficult for people to take the word "obedience" into their hearts and cradle it like an adorable and cuddly newborn. After all, just look at what people put on their bumper stickers: The Closer You Get, the Slower I Drive; If You Can Read This You're too Damn Close!; Watch Out for the Moron Behind Me; Warning: I Break Whenever I Feel Like It: Bitch on Board; Diva Mobile; No Fear; Keep Honking While I Reload.

So it isn't too difficult to imagine these people having a problem with this concept. Nevertheless, why is obedience important? Well, consider the fact that if everyone did as they desired on the roadways (and I should qualify that, more than they do already-what I call, creative driving) then there would be a greater number of accidents and chaos. Same with obeying any and all laws. Unfortunately, we do have a problem with obedience so there are a lot of laws. But let's move on to how obedience is personally helpful to you.

When the word obedience is invoked, most have a picture of a school marm leveling a ruler at an unruly student. Or Sister Watch-it-mister about to give the boy who can't keep quiet a good dusting, and then some. But that is not what is being spoken to here. Obedience is an essential element to those who are successful. If you are going to be successful, there is a dire need for obedience to your own laws. Of course, these laws are pretty general, but you accept them, modify them, and make them your own. Without obedience to your personal laws of success, if I may, then there is no success. What do I mean?

Well, in order to be successful, you have to have goals: short, medium and long term. You have to focus on them on a regular basis, keep them fresh in your mind and modify them as you see fit. If we are talking success, most likely you are in business for yourself. There are those who have a job and climb the corporate latter to success (at least I think people still do this); however, because of the instability of the current economic environment, more and more people are going into business for themselves. This is happening because some people see the get-a-job-and-find-the-American-dream matrix for what it is. As I've stated previously, more and more people are falling out of the middle class-most, unfortunately, falling down. It is becoming more and more expensive and almost impossible to make ends meet. Here's some interesting information for you, a testament as to why obedience is imperative. I'll explain in a moment. Bear with me.

By 2004, the family budget looks very different. As noted earlier, although a man is making nearly $800 less than his counterpart a generation ago, his wife's paycheck brings the family to a combined income that is $73,770-a 75 percent increase. But higher expenses have more than eroded that apparent financial advantage. Their annual mortgage payments are more than $10,500. If they have a child in elementary school who goes to daycare after school and in the summers, the family will spend $5,660. If their second child is a pre-schooler, the cost is even higher-$6,920 a year. With both people in the workforce, the family spends more than $8,000 a year on its two vehicles. Health insurance costs the family $1,970, and taxes now take 30 percent (today, it's actually 42 to 50%) of its money. The bottom line: today's median-earning, median-spending middle-class family sends two people into the workforce, but at the end of the day they have about $1,500 less for discretionary spending than their one-income counterparts of a generation ago. In the early 2000s, the median income for the majority of families (dual income families) was $73,000, of which $55,600 was for fixed costs (mortgage, child care, health care, car, taxes) while $18,110 was allotted as discretionary income. Not much of a buffer, is it? Most of this money being spent on cloths, food, credit cards, cable / satellite TV, entertainment and so on. Even though the families combined income is a 75% higher than in the 70s, the cost of living adjustment has almost negated any gain. So many are now seeing having a business as the only way to go, where you get great tax breaks not great taxation.

So why is obedience important? Why has obedience to your own principles taken on such great importance? Well, because of downsizing, corporate outsourcing, and mostly because of cost of living, there is a greater and greater need for an alternative to the grind-it-out, let-the-tax-man-take-40%-before-you-even-see-it, climb-the-career-latter mode of operation. It is an outmoded and unsafe way to live, living on the edge, or as Warren says above, the "precipice." The belief that an education and hard work is going to help you make ends meet is a myth and a fantasy. You can certainly make more money with mom and dad both at work with college degrees but it just doesn't cut it like it used to.

I know couples who are making $80,000 and are struggling. In my father's day that was enough money to live comfortably, and we did, but now it's a pipe dream, and even dual incomes can't blow out the pipes. So bottom line, if you are not obedient to a constant vigilance of the economic and political environment (national and international), and an observance of emotion based success principles (many people are smart, creative and insightful but shoot themselves in the foot with sloppy, lazy, downright improper thinking habits) in order to make the money needed to live comfortably and with less damn-those-stinking-bills stress, you, my friend, are in trouble. It is time to wake from the matrices you live in, smell the true economic environment and get going.
Before I close, consider these other issues in regards to obedience:

Obedience to truth. Who wants to work with, associate with, be around someone who isn't obedient here?

Obedience to our spouses and children's welfare.

Obedience to our need to support them.

Obedience to choosing leaders we feel would do the best job in government.

Obedience to knowing on a consistent basis where the money's going, how much you have and where you can get more if you need to.

Oklahoma Bankruptcy Laws - Personal Property Exemptions

Motor Vehicles
As per the insolvency regulations, the debtor declared as bankrupt is allowed to claim exemptions for any number of motor vehicles. The good thing I that there are no retractions in terms of the number of motor vehicles, but the maximum amount is restricted only up to three thousand dollars.
Clothing
Clothing has also been declared as exempt personal property under the Oklahoma liquidation laws. However, the maximum amount that you can exempt under this category is only four thousand dollars.
Livestock Exemptions
Livestock exemptions have also been included. If you are a permanent resident of Oklahoma and you have been declared as bankrupt, as per the court in Oklahoma, you are allowed to exempt the livestock as much as the following:A maximum of hundred chickens
Twenty sheep
Those five cows who are able to produce milk for human consumption
Ten hogs
And, a maximum of hundred chickens are also exempt under the new bankruptcy laws.
Bridles And Saddles
The Oklahoma bankruptcy laws also allow you to exempt a maximum of two bridles and two saddles.
Claims For Injury
If the debtor declared as bankrupt is eligible for some workers' compensation, such as any Claim for personal bodily injury etc, as per the Oklahoma laws, the debtor can get exemptions up to as much as fifty thousand dollars, but the amount in this category must not exceed this upper limit. What is more, it is also important for you to note here that such exemptions do not include any claim for exemplary or punitive damages.

The personal property bankruptcy exemptions also include the following, as per the Oklahoma bankruptcy laws:Food materials, furniture, and health aids can also be considered to be exempted, but only up to the amount that should last a maximum of one year. Family portraits and other such pictures are also allowed to be exempted under the personal property exemptions in the state of Oklahoma. Other than that, you can also exempt books of up to any amount. Interestingly, the state liquidation rules also allow you to exempt gun under the personal property exemptions.
As per the Oklahoma bankruptcy laws, you cannot substitute the Oklahoma specific filing bankruptcy exemptions with the federal exemptions completely. However, the bankruptcy court allows you to use the both, in order to claim your exemptions. For example, you may use the personal property exemptions, as specified by the new bankruptcy laws of Oklahoma and other exemptions, as specified under the federal law.
