Tactical gear for proper law enforcement

By Ken Wilson
Law enforcement agencies, that we usually call the police, are designated by the government to serve and protect us. In order to be effective, police officers must be provided with proper police equipment. Their and our safety depends on the quality of their tactical gear, which must be chosen and used with responsibility and ability. They face life threatening situations all the time and are trained to defend themselves and other people. This is why police officers should be equipped with proper tactical gear every day of the week, every hour of the day.

Maybe the most recognizable pieces of police equipment are represented by police cars. These are vehicles used by police forces to patrol and transport criminal suspects. So proper police cars should possess power, sturdiness and speed. They are usually normal cars that were upgraded in order to fit the special needs of police work, meaning that they were modified to allow greater speed, durability and capability for higher mileage driving. It was also necessary for some changes to be made so that the electronic police equipment could be supported.

As the need for security has increased over the years, officers are required to carry numerous pieces of tactical gear. They have to be sure that they are properly equipped all the time. Duty belts help them carry the equipment while having the hands free. In the past, duty belts held only a few pieces of police equipment, but now they have to hold a larger range of items, including handcuffs and keys, batons, duty weapons or flashlights. So they have to be made of stiff-edged and strong material in order to support the weight of all this equipment. But still they shouldn’t be too stiff, as this could cause fatigue, bruising or back pains. Like most of the police equipment, duty belts knew some improvements over time. They were adapted to fit different sizes and frames, especially since women joined the police. A belt which is too big can encumber the officer and one which is too small does not allow quick movements to be made.

Police batons have also undergone some modifications. They were first used in the early 1800s and became one of the most important items of tactical gear carried by police officers. Now they know a variety of forms, the general tendency being to use smaller batons in order to fit smaller spaces. Even collapsible batons are made, but they are less durable.

K9 tactical gear has known a lot of changes too, given the increasing use of dogs for law enforcement purposes. Nowadays, K9 equipment includes protection sleeves, protection clothes like scratch pants and protection jackets, training items like reed sticks, dumbbells, leashes, sports harnesses, chains, hooks, leather collars, muzzles, bite work equipment. The patrol car used by K9 units is specifically designed for the use of dogs, enhancing their comfort, ventilation and preventing them from being injured.

The evolution of the tactical gear used by police forces helps them to better perform their duties. But using proper police equipment is not enough for being a good officer. It takes a lot of training, discipline, legislation knowledge and, last but not least, passion for the job and willingness to help and serve the public.
